Congratulations to our first Volunteer of the Year, Chris Bogus. Chris is a local Optician at William J. Bogus, O.D., F.A.A.O. He has worked in Optometry for 13 years. Chris was asked by current board member, Fred Gottlieb, to open the doors of the vision world and The Hope Alliance. In 2011, the opportunity arose for Chris use his skills in international humanitarian work and optometry to connect the THA staff with a functioning system for mobile vision clinics. Over the years, his passion for eye care and serving others has provided tools for The Hope Alliance to spread the Vision Program worldwide. He has co-lead 7 vision trips and traveled with The Hope Alliance to 21 project areas in Peru, Guatemala, and the Navajo Reservation.
This year Chris has helped THA staff create and implement a new Trip Participant Training Program and a Trip Leader Training Program. This addition to our Vision Program will give volunteers the necessary tools to run a successful vision clinic. This new program will allow our volunteers to safely and effectively provide eye glasses and teach about the devastating effects of Pterygium, which is a disease of the eye that is a result of long exposures to ultraviolet light. Chris' vast knowledge in the world of eye care has helped The Hope Alliance's Vision Program excel and thrive in impoverished areas where access to eye care is not possible. We appreciate his commitment to our organization and the time he help he has given to the relationships we have locally and internationally.
"This work adds a whole new meaning to my life. I feel like this is what we're supposed to do with our time on this planet". -Christopher Bogus
